Helping trainee journalists gain radio newsroom experience

2SER is a community radio station in Sydney that provides opportunities for trainee journalists to gain experience and new skills in a newsroom environment.

Funding from the Institute has allowed 2SER to continue providing paid opportunities for trainee journalists as well as keeping its listeners informed throughout the pandemic.

2SER Managing Director Martin Walters said the program continues to be successful, despite changes in to the media industry.

“Despite the cuts to newsrooms across Australia, three 2SER newsroom volunteers have moved on to industry employment in — adding to the dozens who have found paid media work in the previous three years,” he said.

“At the same time, through this activity the radio station has been able to maintain a consistent news service for its audience — particularly important during the coronavirus pandemic.”
