With the support of the Judith Neilson Institute, Ulrik Haagerup, the founder and CEO of the Constructive Institute in Denmark, visited Australia and was the keynote speaker at Constructing Tomorrow’s News, an event held in Sydney on March 10, 2020.
He shared his vision for a more constructive approach to news, where journalists focus less on negative stories. Mr Haagerup said this approach is necessary if journalists want to win back the trust of their audiences.
Doing it differently
Following Ulrik Haagerup’s address, a panel of Australian news leaders, including Lenore Taylor (Guardian Australia), Gaven Morris (ABC), Lisa Davies (The Sydney Morning Herald) and Campbell Reid (News Corp), and moderated by the ABC’s Fran Kelly, explored the opportunities and challenges of covering major news events in ways that better engage with audiences.
