Meet The Scientists

Dr Saul Griffith

Dr Saul Griffith is an engineer who was described as a “prodigy of invention in service of the world” when he received his MacArthur “genius grant". He has Ph.D. in material science and information theory, has founded many San Francisco based tech companies, and has served as Joe Biden’s climate adviser. He is co-founder and chief scientist of Rewiring Australia, a non-profit group working to ‘electrify everything’ and reduce emissions, and his latest book is The Big Switch: Australia's electric future.

Prof Naomi McClure-Griffiths

Prof Naomi McClure-Griffiths is an astronomer and expert in interstellar gas and magnetic fields of the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. She is chair and director of Astronomy Australia, and associate director of ANU's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. She has worked with some of the most impressive telescopes in the world. Her work has been recognised with many accolades, including a 2021 Laureate Fellowship from the Australian Research Council and the Prime Minister’s Physical Scientist of the Year.

Prof Veena Sahajwalla

Professor Veena Sahajwalla is an internationally celebrated materials scientist, engineer and inventor. She is director of UNSW’s Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMaRT) Centre, and the inventor of Green Steel® Polymer Injection Technology®, an eco-friendly steel production process that uses tyres and other wastes in steel making. Veena is leader of the new national Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub, director of the ARC Microrecycling Research Hub, and in 2018 she launched the world's first MICROfactorie®.

Meet Your Host

Adam Spencer
Adam Spencer is host of Ideas at JNI. The author, broadcaster and comedian was completing a PhD in Pure Mathematics when he happened to win the national triple j Raw Comedy championship in 1996. From there, a TV and radio career beckoned and Adam completed 15 years as one of Australia’s most respected, wittiest and thought-provoking breakfast radio commentators across triple j and ABC 702. Adam has also released seven books, his latest being Maths 101, for Dumb Dads and Desperate Mums.
