The Institute’s early projects reflect its three core streams of activity: grants, education and events.

The Institute’s grants program supports the creation of high-quality journalism. It is based upon five principles:

  1. 1. To create new opportunities for journalists to do more journalism
  2. 2. To focus on those projects that will have the greatest impact
  3. 3. To encourage new investment in journalism
  4. 4. To be non-partisan
  5. 5. To respect the principle of editorial independence

The Institute’s education initatives help working journalists to develop and apply new skills.

The events program champions quality journalism and promotes a lively public discussion of the big issues shaping Australia and the world.
