New bureau telling stories from the Pacific

Funding to for a new Pacific editor at Guardian Australia

The Pacific receives minimal coverage at a time when the region is increasingly important for geopolitical, military and security reasons. Critical strategic, social, environmental, crime and business stories are not being told.

The Institute has supported the Guardian Australia to employ a specialist Pacific editor, based in Sydney, to help address the lack of coverage in Australia.

Kate Lyons was appointed to the role in October 2019 and quickly established a strong network of Pacific-based contributors. She has been recognised for her work as Pacific Editor with a nomination for the 2020 Lowy Institute Media Award.

In 2020, Ben Doherty stepped into the role while Lyons was on leave.

The Guardian’s Pacific project has featured stories from Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Samoa, Vanuatu and Fiji.

In December 2020, the Institute announced that it would fund the project for a second year.
